Description
Materials:
Mixed Media Fiberart: Remnant fabrics, up cycled faux florals, handmade mini paper windows and doors, buttons, beads, small objects, ribbon, thread, adhesive, MDF, cardboard, and women’s size six pants.
Technique:
I began with a sketch of an image, and I applied it to fabric. I then machine-sewed pieces of remnant fabric and layered the pieces, adding hand-stitched pieces to the combination. I opted for a handmade frame using a found item made from MDF that I wrapped in a pair of pants with the pockets on opposing corners. The backing is remnant velvet sewn around foam core. I tacked the faux greenery and florals in place before hand-sewing and gluing to bond them to the sewn work. Then I built the layers to hold the windows and doors, allowing the pieces to flow outward, as they would if the Earth reclaimed cleared land. The windows and doors are hand-drawn, using watercolor paper, and they are sewn together by machine and hand-sewn into the design to secure them in place. I intentionally leave long threads to portray the concept of life’s tethers, leaving a presence in this world, a spillage of life once contained within the now open windows and doors.
Artist Statement:
Eighteen years of life seemed like enough to take on the world. Until I was opened like a window. The source of my silent illness was exposed. I was reconfigured. It offered a rare opportunity to peer inside and pluck out the spiking pain.
I made it through 24. The window stayed open for life to enter and leave almost as quickly. That pain was multidimensional. Disfiguring. Indescribably exhausting. Nearly defeating. Pain beyond pain.
Then 33. 39. 43. Embracing loss, grief, change. Numbness. Living outside of myself. Turning something off. Trying to turn it back on.
